Essential Point:
True Trust has nothing to do with Believing the words and actions of another but everything to do with Knowing that you’ll be able to handle them, whatever they may be.
Overview:
On the level of Human, which is to say on the level of Mind, which is also to say the “Worldly” view, Trust is the belief that someone will uphold a certain expectation or standard of behavior, and if they do not, it is considered a violation of Trust, or a betrayal of Trust. Standards of behavior can be individually constructed or, more typically, are informed by societal norms. For example, when we do not think our romantic partner will cheat on us, we typically say we “Trust them,” and if we do think they may cheat on us, or otherwise betray us in some way, we typically say we “don’t Trust them.”
In Truth, the Worldly view of Trust is actually one of distrust, as it is placing conditions on one’s behavior and therefore implying that one is only to be Trusted if they behave accordingly to an arbitrarily chosen set of moral standards. Trust, as the World defines it, is about control, and possession and therefore is inherently Ego-based. This foundation of Trust is doomed from the start as no one has the Power to control another, and further, those who are in the Unconscious grip of the Ego cannot even control themselves.
True Trust is not about believing another will act in a certain way, and it’s not about controlling what they can or cannot think, feel, or do. In fact, True Trust has nothing to do with the other person and everything to do with Trusting yourself to be able to handle whatever it is they think, feel, or do. More specifically, Trust is no matter what anyone does or does not do, and no matter what happens in your Life, you Know that you will be okay, and that you will retain your inner Peace.
In this view, as one awakens to their true Self, Trust becomes a natural side effect as your Faith is placed in the Higher Self and not in the lower Human. Further, when you Realize that your true Self is beyond the potential of being hurt you Realize that in Essence there is never anything to Forgive, for no one can betray you and nothing can betray you. Through the Realization of Oneness, you Realize the impossibility of betrayal, for betrayal requires an “other.” Thus, true Trust is the Realization that there is no need for Trust. Trust is an inherent quality of the One Self, the Self that we all are and all share. Through Self-Realization, it is impossible to violate Trust as One cannot be violated.
Only in the un-awakened state is Trust a topic of concern, and a matter of determination. Only when egoistically Identified does one ask if they can Trust another, and they must ask this because they do not know if they can Trust themselves, and they do not know if they can Trust themselves because they do not Know themselves.
Trust arises as the Self Awakens. Until this point, distrust is the only natural alternative. In a World of Separate selves, distrust is rational; in a World of One Self, Trust is the only possibility.
